k.c. got cancelled
it was a logistical nightmare
we would have to stay awake impossibly
and drive dangerously sleepy n tired
ok if you have a coach
it would have been foolish to attempt it
im sorry
im sorry to people who made travel arrangements
im sorry to people who were coming
we deeply apologise for any problems caused
i am very very tired
we drove 12 hours yesterday
still vibrating
no time to do anything
a bigger better blog tomorrow

I always think your tour dates are too ambitious and I take my hat off to your commitment.
I'm one of the lucky ones and I appreciate it.

Hi Steve. I'm one of those who had tickets to the KC show. While I'm very disappointed, I do want you and the boys to be safe and not push things. I know touring can get to be a grind, and the constant motion of being in a vehicle day after day does get very, very old. We'll miss you, but I'm glad you've come through before. I hope to see you here again. Stay safe. Appreciate the blog update too. It's very kind. Thanks!

i admit i'm super broken-hearted about the cancellation, but i DO "get" it.

I mean, our drive time woulda been equivalent to your's from Colorado to Missouri, and we were taking an extra day to chill the night before the show because of the hard travel. I cant imagine making the trip AND having to play a gig the same night? you're right to have cancelled.

as crushed as i am, as i said in my last comment, i'm just glad you are all safe and well. i do mean that sincerely. we've got some beautiful new music from y'all to enjoy. thank you, from the bottom to the top of my heart, for that.

    safe travels….

They would've had to get offstage in Denver, and immediately get in the van and start driving all night to Kansas City. This after a 25 hour drive from Seattle. Definitely not safe.

Don't cancel the falls church show, b/c we're all driving up from southern north carolina, but if you do, we'll just drive a few more hours to the next town.

if i were dylan, i'd send my coach and my people to pick you up. 100 shows a year, age 68, no big deal. beats hell out of sitting on your ass.

the show must go on. the people have paid.

drink a few yellow-cans, the 'banquets', and enjoy your tour of america. you need 5 hours sleep per day to unpoach your brain. ease the left-right conflicts.

Having made that 10-hour haul from Denver to KC a number of times, I can relate. It is disappointing to miss yet another Church tour. It's not like we can just go see some "other" band that sounds like the Church.

Anyway, I've got my Painkiller and my Untitled #23 to spin (repeatedly!), so I'll suck it up and deal. You and your compadres be safe, rested, and have a great rest of the tour.

As the estimable road warrior Mike Watt has been wont to say, "if you're not playin' you're payin'." Even if you have to work the road you can't let it work you.

In that spirit: I'm gonna make it to Chicago. Hope you can still make it there. I haven't ever been able to make something work out before and I've been following The Church since I got a dubbed copy of Heyday back in 1987. (Damn near killed my wife to hear that you toured AU wine country with Paul Kelly a while back. She's a huge PK fan. Hopefully she'll be a full convert after this weekend.)

Just wishin' your show was a little later so I could go see The Posies down on Randolph Street…

CEE says, "I always think your tour dates are too ambitious and I take my hat off to your commitment."

Easily said when you don't have tickets for said show. "Commitment?" What a ridiculous and foolish assessment. Personally, if there's not an illness, drug overdose (sorry, Steve-O), or death, not showing up for a gig that fans paid good money to see and set time aside from their busy lives for is pretty f*cking unprofessional. The tour dates were "too ambitious??" Then don't set them only to sh*t on your fans. You know, fans being the reason you HAVE this career!

This only happened because this band apparently thinks people here in the sticks just aren't worth the effort apparently. Do you think they will cancel shows in Chicago, New York, Dallas, Miami, etc? Nah, I'd bet my life they wouldn't. Do I still love the band's music? Always, but this was a sorry f*cking way to sh*t on your fans. Thanks for nothing, Kilbey. Hopefully you'll come back on an 'Oldies' tour in about 10 years. I won't hold my breath, though.

i'm appalled at the vitriol spewed by those anon. folks. "grow some balls?" Post with your name, and THEN talk about growing balls, mr. anon……

not here to start a row….. just horrified at the selfishness of others. and yes, i DO feel i have a right to say somethin about it because I TOO am a fan that spent money, paid for tickets, hotel, took some rare (and hard to come by) time off from work, was plannin on driving 9 or so hours myself, bought extra stuff for the trip etc. but all that said? I'd still rather have the band take care of THEMSELVES!

"You are WEAK!" WHAT??? No, they aren't weak, but? They also aren't 20 year olds…. As if the gigs aren't exhausting enough, throw in epic drive times, and you have the makings of some serious health and well being issues if ya aren't careful. And it's not like they did this intentionally.

Apology MORE than accepted, Mr. K. Have an f'in EXCELLENT rest of the tour! Not only would I do all this again, I *WILL* be doing all this again your next time through!

I was SO fortunate to you at The Roxy in LA and I can verify what frostatmidnight: you've got the physique of a much younger man!

Health and safety are THE top priority and I'm so glad to hear you using common sense (even when you need to cancel a gig) and taking care of yourselves!

After all, if something happens (God forbid) then what good is it? It's like these idiots that are anxious for the pilot to take off when the plane isn't fully operational. Taking the extra time and care to make sure everyone arrives safely is imperative.

Anyway, rest up, stay safe and healthy.

    Sending healing hugs to you.

C'mon, people! Stop trying to justify this band's unprofessional and sorry-assed behavior. If I don't want to show up for work because I stayed up until 1:30 in the morning, I don't call in sick or f*cking CANCEL. I show up because I made a commitment to people. That's how it works. Unless health reasons (the only health hazard here may be Steve's drug dabbling) interfere, show up for the gig, or you aren't worth a damn in the real world. Why isn't THAT opinion being considered here???

Simply put, if you can't keep your word by honoring a commitment, you're a liar. PERIOD. The Church lied to their KC fans and people on this ridiculous blog try to justify this abhorrent work-ethic, while they will get to see their shows in cities that The Church thinks matter more than some smaller city in Middle America. I am fucking outraged at this band for this Bullsh*t. I will always enjoy their music, but these guys have lost a MOUNTAIN of my respect….not that they give two sh*ts. That's why they cancel shows. They just don't CARE…….

MARY sez: "if the fans get angry or upset and dont understand then they arent fans at all, (wink)"

How stupid……It's BECAUSE we ARE (or should I say WERE) fans that we are disappointed of this shoddy, sad cancellation in KC. I bought my first Church album in 1982 and I bought it via Import, because there wasn't a copy to be had anywhere in Kansas City. So, your judging of who IS or isn't a fan is foolish. You are simply talking out your a$$…..and this band is truly F-O-U-L to cancel gigs when there isn't a body being swept off a Hotel room somewhere. If these guys are on the road, then BE on the road and honor commitments. Perhaps Aussies just don't have the same honor, pride, or work-ethic we Yanks do…………….tsk.tsk. Bloated, Rock Stars who have taken a page out of "Spinal Tap." I thought THIS band was above that kind of crap.

Unbelievable words out of your selfish, inconsiderate noggin, you "anon" cry baby. Health is exactly the reason they couldn't make it to KC in the first place. Would you have preferred it if they were seriously hurt, or God forbid, even killed in a road accident or something due to over exertion and exhaustion? Do you think they are riding in a sweet, luxurious coach driven by hired bloke? Do you think they are sleeping in 5-star hotels and are driven to the gigs in limousines?? Well, you are wrong, friend, and way out of line. We're all lucky they are even here, and still making records and on the road after 30 years!!! Seriously, who else gives you this kind of interaction, upfront and personal?? Besides you don't know all of the logistics. If you were a real fan or even cosidered yourself a "friend" to the band, you would have never said all that rubbish. Yes, it does seriously suck that they could not be there for you guys this time around. We've probably all been deprived of a show or two before for undisclosed reaons. It does suck when it happens, no doubt. But you have a seriously venomous tongue and I am fairly certain that you do not represent the majority of Church "fans" that had intentions and plans of seeing them in Kansas City. There was no "lie" or any "promise" to you to be there. Calling them "unprofessional"??? Jesus!! Are you kidding? You are just an obnoxious overly-disappointed poor excuse for a "fan." "They just don't care" Ohhh, boo-hooo. Come on, man!!! Seriously, life is FULL of disappointments, and I can't blame you for being bummed out about this, but those were some truly vicious remarks to the band and SK…referring to "drug use", etc. That's hitting way below the belt. Give us all a break and either apologize or simply leave already. On that note, isn't the Church worth forgiveness?

Well, Kilbey…..if I'm an idiot, at least I have the common decency to honor commitments, unlike you. I mean, am I WRONG about this?? Don't think so. As far as you smacking me "round the head" (what the f*ck does that even MEAN??), you would definitely be barking up the wrong tree. TRUST me!

In Robert Lurie's book, Nic(k) Ward states that you have a big mouth with little or nothing to back it up, and y'know, I'll just bet that's entirely true. I would LOVE you to TRY and smack me round the head, but you state that I know where I can find you….well, since you aren't coming to KC, that's apparently not the case now, is it? Just some more bullsh*t.

I am glad you appreciate the others understanding on this egregious and pathetic error on the band's part, but you guys F*cked up. What's to understand?? Anyway, I'll f*ck off now, but know this, I wouldn't go to see you fading flowers ever again if you were playing for free on my front porch. I've learned THAT from all this. Now this "idiot" has some commitments to honor. Watch and learn…………..I'm out.

    Thanks BV and SK.

I think this person really believes that booking the KC show and then canceling it was a planned move conjured up in backroom in Sydney somewhere; a move directed at it personally so as to fk with its head.

The world doesn't revolve around you, anon – get used to it!

missing a gig is no big deal. it happens all the time.

Kilbey and the Church are translators for a vibration that wouldn't even be on this planet except in our dreams if they weren't doing their jobs which is to bring it here thru music. Thank the gods they have been so willing to suffer what it takes to bring the sounds to manifestation.

So sorry to not see one of my favorite bands ever. Also missing Adam Franklin is a shame. Please plan another visit to us in KC. Soon.

anon, you shithead, you are a fucking coward hiding behind Anonymous, its so sad you wont even put your real name, you were never a fan like i said, cause if you were you wouldnt be treating the band you say you liked like this, you are a fake and need attention and its sad you come here to do it, what you cant get laid? you dont have friends? did mommy make you dress up a certain way so therefore you have to talk shit about the way people dress, there is a reason why I hate people like you, I wear a tshirt and jeans all the time and i dont give a shit what people like you think and the funny thing is I dress down and Church or a nice restaraunt and you know what? I dont fucking care what people think, so quit talking shit, grow some balls, and go get a life, and stop getting into this blog, cause no one gives a shit about your fucking opinion anyway. PS, we dont know if you actually missed work or not cause you dont have a blog and talk about it, we dont know what you do all day so dont talk shit about other people and say your are the better one if you have no proof you fucking idiot.

…..oooops, I'm back one more time (just for YOU, Mary) to state that it wasn't ME who was ragging on Kilbey's shorts. I could give two sh*ts what he wears. That wasn't me. Period. That's just silly. As for your caring about my opinion, well, apparently YOU do, or you wouldn't be screeching like some sad little harpie, as you've just done here. Lots of invective, but zero substance. Nice, Mary………..

Look, all I was saying here is that Kilbey and company are a bunch of spoiled primma donnas who are a disgrace to touring bands EVERYWHERE for cancelling shows for no good reason (oh, I work SOOO hard! Well, so do I, Kilbey, so do I)…..and this comes from someone who has enjoyed their music longer than you have, so please shut your piehole, OK. Oh, the mouth on you! Your concern for my BALLS is lovely, though. It would also be a grand idea if you deleted your photo….Good lord! Don't worry, I'll let you folks get back to worshiping this lazy has-been. NOW-I'm gone. For good (seriously). On to COMMITMENTS. Adios………….

hey anon! have you ever been in a touring band before? if you have, then you would know half the booking agents out there are humans not robots and they occasionally make mistakes figuring in drive time and don't factor in some details of long drives becoming longer because ANYTHING can happen out there! also, most of the time it's the tour manager's decision to skip a gig NOT the band… ya see? so lay off this poor band you've been a fan of for SO long…. it's weirding everyone out.

Sorry for the day late/dollar short reply….It took for ever to find this old pic. This is what happened to some friends of mine (early 1990's) when they drove for a really long time non stop. All band members survived!
