the church Red Hill Auditorium – Sunday 4th Dec 2011 the church return to Perth for a special concert at the Red Hill Auditorium on Sunday 4th December 2011. Since the last two sold out shows at the Quarry Amphitheatre in December 2009 the band has been extremely busy. In October 2010 they were inducted into the Australian Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. In February 2011 they toured the USA with their “Future Past Perfect Tour” playing three classic albums in their entirety Untitled #23, Priest=Aura and Starfish. In April this year they played a sold out concert, “A Psychedelic Symphony” at the Sydney Opera House with the 70 piece George Ellis Orchestra. At Red Hill the band will be performing songs from their deep catalogue including popular favourites such as Under The Milky Way and Almost With You as well as thought provoking lyrical gems entwined with evocative moods, crashing drums and bass and ringing guitars. This show is also special by nature of the bill, including The Triffids and Ed Kuepper. Kuepper most famously from seminal Brisbane punk outfit The Saints and the newest ‘Bad Seed’. (Martyn Casey from The Triffids an established ‘Bad Seed’ already). The Triffids need no introduction to a Perth audience. Steve Kilbey performed as guest vocalist with them on their reformation dates in January 2008. The show promises to explore the more creative side of Australian music with these three most interesting artists. Held in an open air setting at Red Hill Auditorium on a balmy night in paradise, this is a concert not to be missed.

The releases also include unseen photos and extensive, revealing sleeve notes written by Marty Willson-Piper.

Seeing the church – Steve Kilbey, Peter Koppes, Tim Powles and Marty Willson-Piper in this spectacular setting is an event not to be missed – a one-off celebratory concert focusing on the most illustrious of careers and performing a wealth of material from their deep catalogue.

Recent Concert Reviews Have Been Outstanding:

“The band thrilled ardent followers by weaving musical spells full of grand gestures, menacing atmosphere and stratospheric radiance.”
– Jeff Elbel Chicago Sun Times February 2011

“Textures. Beyond the brilliant songwriting, it’s the sonic textures that make the church my favorite band on the planet. You can tell how much attention they pay to getting the right sound for every song. A dazzling blend of guitar tones from Peter Koppes and Marty Willson-Piper, astute drumming by Tim Powles and sharp bass playing from Steve Kilbey waxes and wanes from melodic to dissonant to ethereal and back again; it’s stunning ensemble work that frames Kilbey’s distinctive baritone voice as he intones a rush of imaginative lyrics that wander from wry to surreal: the church sound like no other band, and create a memorable flow of music that resonates deep in my brain.”
– Anton A, Tantalized (Review of Highline Ballroom and BB Kings Shows in NYC)

Reviews of “Untitled #23” have also been exceptional around the world:

Rolling Stone Australia gave the album an unprecedented 5 star review.
“A stunningly ambitious album of shimmering rock.”

Rolling Stone USA in Fricke’s Picks,
“A genuine milestone in longevity and psychedelic invention.”

Classic Rock UK
“What is on offer – aside from a masterpiece of dynamics and craft – is the irresistible sound of integrity.”

The Age
“It’s a haunting, dark, thrilling, ecstatic, melodic psychedelic journey in ten unforgettable pieces. “

Beat Magazine
“Untitled #23 is kaleidoscopic but accessible, tightly focused psych-pop brilliance.”

Sydney Morning Herald
“Sparkling electric poetry from some guitar-shaped hole in the universe.” ****

ARIA Chairman and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sony Music Entertainment Australia & NZ Denis Handlin, AM said, “It’s very exciting to be again celebrating the extraordinary history of Australian popular music and the many incredible artists who have made it so special. We are delighted to induct such a distinguished group of Australian artists into the ARIA Hall of Fame. Between them there are many years of unforgettable music history, including the 40th career anniversary of John Williamson and the 30-year anniversary of the church.  We are proud to honour them all.”

For the first time since it began in 2005 as a standalone event, the ARIA HALL OF FAME will be staged in Sydney at the Hordern Pavilion on Wednesday, 27 October, 2010.  It will also, for the first time, be broadcast on free to air television on SBS’ RocKwiz.

“SBS is thrilled to be the new broadcast partner for the ARIA Hall of Fame, honouring musical brilliance from around the country.  It’s a true testament to the popularity of RocKwiz that we have been asked to come on board to present this prestigious event” said Matt Campbell, Director of Television and Online Content, SBS.

With their unique and distinctive guitar sounds and lyrics forever inspiring imagination, the church have grown without compromise into one of the most well-respected rock groups amongst peers and fans the world over. Formed in Sydney in 1980, the church has always been in a parallel orbit to the pop world, an utterly engaging art-rock trip that is far easier to experience than to describe. From the debut album Of Skins and Hearts (with national hit The Unguarded Moment) to the artistically and commercially successful Starfish (with the world-wide recognised hit Under the Milky Way and guitar driven Reptile), and iconic songs such as Almost With You and When You Were Mine through to 2009’s lush, organic masterpiece Untitled #23 (the album that Rolling Stone Australia gave an unprecedented 5 star review), bassist and lead vocalist Steve Kilbey, guitarists Peter Koppes and Marty Willson-Piper and drummer/producer Tim Powles have continued through three whole decades to pleasure their fans with a unerring  sense of space, melody,  beat driven prose and sonic charm. Of the church, legendary music writer and fan David Fricke wrote “At its most compelling, the band scrambles the real and the surreal with ease, rattling its stately guitarchitecture with howling north-wind echo and the troubled undertow of Kilbey’s enigmatic lyrics. It’s like being in the middle of a recurring but constantly evolving dream where only the faces remain the same.”  A combination of chemistry, talent and desire for excellence has found the church in 2010 with the luxury of reflecting on their huge body of work, having never before stopped long enough to rest on any laurels. On their 30th anniversary the church continue to redefine what a rock band should be whether performing live or in the studio. ARIA is proud to induct them into the Hall of Fame.

On behalf of the church, Steve Kilbey said “We were all thrilled to hear of our impending induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame.  To be honoured by an industry that we love being a part of, and to be in the Hall of Fame alongside bands that we’ve been fans of ourselves, is more than we ever expected”

With special guest inductors yet to be announced, musical performances and the unique collaboration with RocKwiz, the 2010 ARIA HALL OF FAME, promises to deliver an irreverent celebration of our historic musical diversity. Simply, this is a night not to be missed.
