Red Hill Auditorium – Sunday 4^th Dec 2011

the church return to Perth for a special concert at the Red Hill Auditorium on Sunday 4^th December 2011. Since the last two sold out shows at the Quarry Amphitheatre in December 2009 the band has been extremely busy. In October 2010 they were inducted into the Australian Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. In February 2011 they toured the USA with their “Future Past Perfect Tour” playing three classic albums in their entirety Untitled #23, Priest=Aura and Starfish. In April this year they played a sold out concert, “A Psychedelic Symphony” at the Sydney Opera House with the 70 piece George Ellis Orchestra.

At Red Hill the band will be performing songs from their deep catalogue including popular favourites such as Under The Milky Way and Almost With You as well as thought provoking lyrical gems entwined with evocative moods, crashing drums and bass and ringing guitars.

This show is also special by nature of the bill, including The Triffids and Ed Kuepper. Kuepper most famously from seminal Brisbane punk outfit The Saints and the newest ‘Bad Seed’. (Martyn Casey from The Triffids an established ‘Bad Seed’ already). The Triffids need no introduction to a Perth audience. Steve Kilbey performed as guest vocalist with them on their reformation dates in January 2008.

The show promises to explore the more creative side of Australian music with these three most interesting artists. Held in an open air setting at Red Hill Auditorium on a balmy night in paradise, this is a concert not to be missed.

“Dos Momentos Especiales” December 2011

Parallel to their “Future Past Perfect” classic albums tour, Homebake Festival in Sydney, Red Hill Auditorium in Perth and Tweed Heads Show, the church will also be playing acoustic shows in NSW this December 2011.

This mini concurrent tour “Dos Momentos Especiales” will see the band perform their two acoustic albums “El Momento Descuidado” and

“El Momento Siguiente” in their entirety. Featuring re workings of classic hits, new songs and reinterpretations of album tracks, this intriguing version of the band sees the four members swapping instruments, anecdotes and notions.

Each ticket holder will receive a free program so book early to guarantee a seat for this popular stripped down incarnation of the band.

the church’s 30th Anniversary year has taken the band all over the USA and Australia with the induction in October 2010 into the ARIA Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.  In April 2011 the band played their “A Psychedelic Symphony” concert at a sold out Sydney Opera House with the 70-piece George Ellis Orchestra.

To conclude these celebrations the band are pleased to announce the Australian “Future Past Perfect Tour” in December 2011. The band will perform an album from each decade of their existence – the critically acclaimed Untitled #23, perennial fan favourite Priest=Aura and the iconic Starfish. In America the shows were rapturously received and reviews were outstanding. As this tour comes to Australia it is an opportunity to experience the past, present and future of one of Australia’s best and most intriguing bands.

Untitled #23 released in 2009 is widely regarded as a modern classic and has received glowing reviews from the music press, including an unprecedented 5 star review in Rolling Stone magazine. Priest=Aura (1992) has constantly been voted as a favourite of church fans over the years and Starfish (1989) is the album that put the church on the map in America. Starfish features along with The Blurred Crusade (1982) as one of two entries by the band in the “The Best 100 Australian Albums” book published in 2011.

The ticket price includes an exclusive A4 program featuring album and single sleeve artwork, selected lyrics and photographs of Steve Kilbey, Peter Koppes, Tim Powles and Marty Willson-Piper. This seated show will include two intermissions and will last for three and half hours with no support. Playing the albums in reverse chronological order the band ask you to simply close your eyes, sit back and join us on this special journey through the decades.

Steven Kilbey, Peter Koppes and Tim Powles announce UNIVERSE WITHIN, an Autism Awareness and Benefit Gig. This very special one-off performance, which sees the three taking the stage with an array of special guests, will be held at The Red Rattler in Marrickville on June 23, and will donate money raised to the not-for-profit organisation, Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect).

Autism spectrum disorders affect at least 1 in 160 people.  Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that remains largely misunderstood by the community, despite its prevalence and far-reaching consequences.  Early intervention and treatment of the disorder opens up the best opportunities for progress so that many people with Autism can lead productive lives.

Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) works in partnership with families and service providers, offering evidence-based interventions for individual needs, including early intervention services, assessments, workshops, volunteer support, and outreach programs.  Aspect also offers services for adults with Autism spectrum disorders.  All programs rely on community support and aim to maximise learning potential, participation, and independence by increasing capacity and confidence.

As well as musical performances,   the UNIVERSE WITHIN Autism Awareness and Benefit Gig will also feature artworks and photographs for sale and/or auction and involvement from Aspect representatives.  What’s more, we are told that “a special treat may be in store for some Church fans hampering to hear some songs from the Refo:mation” (Tim Powles).

There will be no door charge on the night.  Instead, punters are asked to be generous and dig as deep as you can by leaving a completely tax deductable donation on entry of around $60.

the church return to Australia on Sunday April 10th 2011 to perform “A Psychedelic Symphony”, a very special concert presented by International Music Concepts and held at the iconic Sydney Opera House.

The band will perform a selection of their greatest musical moments of the last 31 years alongside 67 young and vibrant players from the Sydney University Symphony Orchestra conducted by the irrepressible George Ellis. Featuring 3 talented soloists – Patti Hood on concert harp, from Joshua Tree, California, Sophie Collins on cello, based in deepest darkest Western Australia and local renowned musician Johnny Zwartz on double bass. Shelley Harland and Tiare Helberg feature on silvery backing vocals, established multi instrumentalist Craig Wilson completes the line up.

It has now been a year and a half of constant touring, celebrating the band’s 30th anniversary and performing their latest album Untitled #23 (featuring Patti, Sophie and Shelley). In April 2010 the band toured “An Intimate Space” in the USA playing a song from each of their albums in reverse chronological order, giving away a program and free CD of even more new material. In October 2010 the band were inducted into the ARIA Hall Of Fame and toured “An Intimate Space” in November and December in Australia. This was followed by the “Future Past Perfect” Tour in the USA playing Starfish, Priest=Aura and Untitled #23 in their entirety with another free program and a three and a half hour show of captivating music that mesmerized the sell out crowds.

With three EP’s: Pangaea, Operetta and Deadman’s Hand now released from Untitled #23 on their own Unorthodox label through MGM, the band have already begun work on a new album expected to be released in 2012. In the meantime EMI Records have followed up the stylishly packaged back catalogue. (Of Skins And Heart 1981, The Blurred Crusade 1982, Seance 1983 and Heyday 1985) with a double-disc Starfish 1988, just released and including rarities and outtakes. The releases also include unseen photos and extensive, revealing sleeve notes written by Marty Willson-Piper.

Seeing the church – Steve Kilbey, Peter Koppes, Tim Powles and Marty Willson-Piper in this spectacular setting is an event not to be missed – a one-off celebratory concert focusing on the most illustrious of careers and performing a wealth of material from their deep catalogue.

Future Past Perfect. Winter Tour USA 2011

Three decades of the church in three classic albums.

Untitled #23, Priest=Aura and Starfish performed in their entirety in one night. In an unprecedented touring event the church return to select cities in the USA to play not one, but three classic albums in one night!

The band, recently inducted into the Australian Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, will begin the night in the present, covering the last decade with the critically acclaimed Untitled #23. Proceeding backwards into the ‘90s the band will then perform perennial fan favourite, Priest=Aura (an album not supported by a tour when originally released in the USA).  And, what better way to conclude the evening than with a performance of the all-time classic album, Starfish.

Come early, leave late and enjoy three great albums in succession played live and electric from one of the great inventive rock bands of our time.

Reissues of the band’s early albums will also finally be available in the USA alongside contemporary releases, all on the Second Motion Entertainment label. The reissues will come in luxurious digi-packs with rare photos and exhaustive sleeve notes written by Marty Willson-Piper.

Constantly releasing new challenging material, embracing their past and reinventing themselves in the present, touring across the decades, performing their music in many different ways, the church continue to evolve into a unique musical entity.  This event is an experience not to be missed for music lovers of all ages, creeds, denominations and persuasions.

To celebrate the milestone of their 30th Anniversary, the church, one of Australia’s and the world’s most prolific and creative bands will perform an exclusive concert with the magnificent George Ellis Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall on Sunday April 10th 2011. The recent induction into the 2010 ARIA Hall Of Fame, has allowed the band to reflect on their huge body of work as they continue to pursue their artistic aspirations both live and in the studio. Their last album
Untitled #23 on their own Unorthodox Records label was lauded by the press as the best of their career, attaining a 5 star review in Australian Rolling Stone. To mark the 30th Anniversary of the band, EMI have re released their first four albums, (with the next four to follow shortly) in luxury packaging with extra tracks, rare photos and detailed sleeve notes written by Marty Willson-Piper. A career spanning compilation is also available.

Alongside timeless classics such as ‘The Unguarded Moment’, ‘Under The Milky Way’, ‘Metropolis’ and ‘Almost With You’, the church continue to redefine what it is to be a band, evolving without compromise from hit makers into one of the world’s most acknowledged and inventive rock groups. This ubiquitous conductor and musical director has worked a diverse range of projects highlights include the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympic Games, the Athens Olympics, the Jakarta Arts Festival, and many concerts at the famous Spiegeltent. George has worked with a myriad of distinguished musicians including Lou Reed, Alex Lloyd and Augie March to name but a few. He has toured internationally to Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and London. He has lectured at prestigious music institutions including the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the Canberra School of Music and has presented workshops in Music Theatre and Conducting for NIDA and the Australian Society for Music Education. He is the Musical Director of the Sydney University Symphony Orchestra.
